Show Picks for November, 2018

November 10 – Jack White at Place Bell
The one current rock artist your “cool” uncle is mostly likely to corner you about at a family dinner, Jack White returns to town in support of his genre-hopping LP, Boarding House Reach. If recent set lists are anything to go by, expect a good amount of White Stripes tracks alongside White’s three solo albums. Note that White is employing a strict no-phone policy for this tour — you’ll be asked to zip up your phone in a Yondr pouch when you get in, so be prepared to say goodbye to your Instagram feed for a couple of hours. 8:00pm, $57-$211.

November 10 – Stiff Little Fingers at Foufounes Electriques
Irish punk legends Stiff Little Fingers are still a force to be reckoned with live, and this show at the relatively cozy Foufounes Electriques should be another scorcher from Jake Burns and co. You can check out coverage of the band’s last two Montreal stops here, and listen to our in-depth podcast interview with frontman Jake Burns here. Canada’s long-running Celtic-rockers The Mahones open.

November 11 – The Lemon Twigs at Corona Theatre
While another pair of young rock n’ roll brothers has been capturing the spotlight recently, Long Island’s The Lemon Twigs are the real deal, an absurdly talented pair of musicians that were still in their mid-teens when their debut album dropped back in 2016. With a huge, kaleidoscopic sound that channels quirky glam-rock and even bits of prog, The Lemon Twigs bring to mind the concept album heyday of the 70’s while still remaining fresh. Combined with a killer live show (just ask one of the 100-odd people who caught their Casa del Popolo show a few years back), this is one of the best bests of the month. Jungle Green opens. 7:30 pm, $25.

November 14 – Hubert Lenoir – Sala Rossa
Fresh from his handful of awards at L’ADISQ, young Quebec buzz singer Hubert Lenoir brings his soulful sound to what will surely be a jam-packed Sala Rossa during M for Montreal, alongside the hilarious and riff-heavy partner (who made our Top 10 albums of 2017 list) and the hazy surf rock of The Garrys. 9:00, $22.50.

November 16 – Helena Deland at Theatre Fairmount
Combining her delicate voice over a wide range of styles, ranging from mellow electronica to cinematic torch songs, Montreal’s Helena Deland refuses to be pigeonholed, a motif that also runs through her release strategy, which has included four separate EPs this year, including the recent From the Series of Songs “Altogether Unaccompanied.” 10:00 pm, $15.

November 16 – Mothland – Sala Rossa
Montreal’s Mothland booking agency have put together a killer bill of Quebec psych-rock, noise bands and general boundary-pushing acts for this M for Montreal showcase, featuring yoo doo right,  FET.NAT, TEKE TEKE, and Black Legary, the psych-rock project featuring two members of Patrick Watson, who will be celebrating the release of their debut LP. November 17 – Classified at Corona Theatre
Long-running Canadian rapper Classified recently released his 16th (!) album, Tomorrow Could Be the Day Things Change, and he’s recruited fellow Canadian hip hop heroes Maestro Fresh Wes and Choclair for this tour, which has all the markings of one serious party. 8:00 pm, $34.

November 22 – Claudio’s Simonetti’s Goblin at Theatre Fairmount
Just in time for the release of the Suspiria remake, Goblin keyboardist Claudio’s Simonetti brings his version of the Italian prog-rock group (there are two versions of Goblin with various original members making the touring rounds) to town for a live scoring of Dario Argento’s original Suspiria, along with other cuts from Goblin’s deep discography. Goblin’s eerie soundtrack to the original Suspiria is one of the most influential scores of all time, which makes this a no-brainer for both horror and prog rock fans. 9:00 pm, $35.

November 22 – Brian Wilson at Theatre St.Denis
Beach Boys mastermind and altogether musical visionary Brian Wilson brings his solo show to the intimate Theatre St. Denis, one of the city’s swankiest venues. At recent shows he’s taken to performing the Beach Boys classic LP Pet Sounds in its entirety, but either way you can expect to hear dozens of some of the greatest pop songs ever written, performed by someone who has only recently been able to begin playing on-stage again. He’ll be joined by Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine, along with frequent band collaborator Blondie Chaplin.
8:00 pm, $102.50+.
