Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 4 4K Blu-ray review

Sony continues their collection of 4K UHD box sets highlighting the vast Columbia Pictures back catalogue with COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION VOLUME 4. Loosely based around falling in (and in some cases, out) of love, this new collection includes 1940’s HIS GIRL FRIDAY, 1967’s GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, 1979’s KRAMER VS. KRAMER, 1984’s STARMAN, 1993’s SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE and 2002’s PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.

All six titles arrive on 4K UHD Blu-ray for the first time and include stunning new 4K transfers, Dolby Atoms tracks, and a mix of new and archival features. As with the other volumes in this collection, the films come housed in a sleek oversized box, complete with a hardcover book featuring new writings on the films and full-colour photos.

Spanning decades of Hollywood history, this new collection offers something for every film fan, all under the general umbrella of a collection of “romantic” films (released just in time for Valentine’s Day, natch).

From the rat-a-tat  dialogue of Howard Hawks’ His Girl Friday, to Nora Ephron’s endlessly re-watchable Sleepless in Seattle to Paul Thomas Anderson’s eagerly awaited Punch Drunk Love, this is a well-chosen and varied set of films that complement each other in unexpected ways when viewed together.

From the top-notch audio and video presentations to the extras (Starman includes the entire first (and last) season of the Starman TV show as a bonus), Sony has put this collection together with the film fan first in mind.

While many other 4K collections from the major film studios feel carelessly tossed off to move product, the Columbia Classics box sets are some of the best catalogue releases on the market, and this latest volume is another must-have.

Now, we just need a reprint of the initial volumes, which are currently fetching a hefty price on the secondary market. Don’t make the same mistake with this latest volume!

COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION VOLUME 4 is available now.
