Beck delivered a career-spanning set at Place Bell

Four years after his last Montreal appearance, Beck finally returned to town (or just outside of it) for a large headlining show at Laval’s Place Bell last night.

For nearly two hours, Beck cherry-picked from throughout his extremely varied catalogue, from cherished 90’s alt-radio hits like opener “Devil’s Haircut,” to sparse, melancholic tracks like “Lost Cause,” off 2002’s Sea Change.

While the show featured top-notch production, including a huge backing video wall and an elaborate light-show, there were still plenty of moments for improvisation, from Beck’s lengthy (and often hilarious) between-song banter, to his attempt to placate a fan holding up a sign by playing a snippet of his early acoustic cut “Satan Gave Me A Taco.”

While ostensibly this is a tour supporting his latest LP Colors, it felt more like a career retrospective, touching on nearly all elements of his nearly three-decade (!) career. There was even a moving tribute to Prince with an audience singalong to “Raspberry Beret.”
