After making her directing debut with last year’s hilarious teen comedy, Booksmart, Olivia Wilde will now be directing a female-starring superhero movie for Marvel Studios. While no specific characters were mentioned in today’s announcement, Wilde did tweet a spider emoji in response to the news, leading to rampant speculation that she is helming the long-rumoured Spider-Woman film.
The Spider-Woman title has been held by a number of characters over the years, including Jessica Drew, Gwen Stacy, not to mention the popular “Spider-Gwen,” incarnation of the character, who was featured in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The film will be written by Booksmart writer Katie Silberman.
Stay tuned for more as this story develops, but this sounds like a great new chapter for the MCU!
