Three of Wu Tang Clan’s most accomplished MC’s, Ghostface Killah, GZA and Cappadonna are currently out together for a Canadian tour that brought them to Theatre Telus on April 3 for a (late) night show. The night’s first DJ definitely had his work cut out for him, spinning hip hop classics for a full three hours before the first live performers hit the stage.

Toronto’s Scrwg Scrilla kicked things off just after midnight with a short but energetic set, followed by Ontario’s DJ Acro, who was also acting as the trio’s DJ (more on that in a minute).

GZA finally took the stage just before 1am, followed soon after by Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna. The trio immediately brought things back to 1993, running through a number of tracks off Wu Tang’s classic Enter the 36 Chambers LP, before throwing in crowd favourite off of their debut solo albums.

The trio came out of the gate with a rush of energy that seemed to revitalize the crowd, may of whom had been milling about the venue for hours at that point (including one fan who moments before had been soundly sleeping on one of the stage monitors). Things got a bit dicey soon after, however, when reoccurring mixing issues with their touring DJ led Ghostface to proclaim to the crowd, “This ain’t my regular DJ. He’s a good kid though.” From that point on, the energy seemed to dissipate from the room, as the late (or early) hour led many in the crowd to start trickling out of the venue. We lasted until about 2:00am, though by all accounts their set never really recovered, lasting just about an hour in total. Hopefully next time around the guys will be steering a tighter ship.

We had the chance to speak to Ghostface earlier this week about the controversial new Wu Tang album that’s locked away for 88 years and Canada Takes the Mic, his upcoming Canadian reality show contest. Check out the full interview here.

Below you can check out photos of the night courtesy of Jason Hughes, who was luckily able to grab some shots before Ghostface insisted that the main stage lights be shut off due to the heat.
