Wonder Woman 1984 heads to HBO Max and theatres on December 25

In a major move for a Hollywood blockbuster, Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman 1984 will land on HBO Max and theatres on December 25th, 2020. This marks the first time a tentpole film of this magnitude will debut on streaming day and date with its theatrical release.

Wonder Woman 1984 was initially slated to open in late 2019, before moving to June 2020, when the release was once again pushed back due to the spread of coronavirus and the closure of most theatres, at least in North America.

“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, which includes Warner Bros. Pictures. “This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see WONDER WOMAN 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”

“We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around WONDER WOMAN 1984 we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot and is directed by Patty Jenkins, who also helmed the original 2017 film that went on to earn more than $800 million at the box office.

Theatres in Quebec remain closed until at least November 27. HBO Max is not yet available in Canada, but most of the new content from the streamer has been available via Crave. Stay tuned to see if Wonder Woman 1984 will also be available for Canadian audiences to unwrap on December 25th.
