Soundgarden announce deluxe Superunknown reissue (and tour with Nine Inch Nails?)

Break out the flannel and your old cherry docs. Soundgarden have just announced a 20th anniversary deluxe re-issue of their Superunknown album, due out May 29th.

Similar to recent Nirvana re-issues, Superunknown will be re-released in a $99 5-disc “Super Deluxe” set, as well as a $55 (!) double vinyl version.

The band will begin their likely-year long push of the re-release by playing the album in its entirely at  the iTunes Festival at SXSW on March 13. That show will be streamed live through iTunes; for more details check out the official iTunes Festival site.

In other Soundgarden news, a well-orchestrated “leak” campaign has been hinting at a summer co-headlining  tour with fellow 90’s outfit Nine Inch Nails. A video teaser on both bands’ instagram accounts hints at a number of venues for the tour, and the astute detectives over in the Echoing the Sound forum have deduced the following potential venues:

Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Morrison, CO
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater – Irvine CA
Nikon at Jones Beach Theater – Wantagh, NY
Cricket Wireless Amphitheater – Bonner Springs, KS
Xfinity Center – Mansfield, MA
MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre – Tampa, FL
DTE Energy Music Theater, Clarkson, MI
Molson Ampitheatre – Toronto, ON
The Austin360 Amphitheater – Austin, TX
Shoreline Amphitheatre – Mountain View, CA
First Midwest Bank Ampitheater – Tinley Park, IL
Merriweather Post Pavilion – Columbia, Md
Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach – Virginia Beach, VA
Woodlands Pavilion – The Woodlands, TX
Gexa Energy Pavilion – Dallas, TX
Isleta Amphitheater – Albuquerque, NM
Aaron’s Amphitheatre – Lakewood, GA
Los Angeles, CA (Gibson Amphitheatre? Hollywood Bowl?)
PNC Bank Arts Center – Holmdel, NJ
PH Live (Planet Hollywood Theater) – Las Vegas, NV
XFINITY Live! – Philadelphia, PA
Sleep Train Amphitheatre – Chula Vista, CA

Given that this is also the 20th anniversary of Nine Inch NailsThe Downward Spiral, a co-headlining tour does make sense, even though Trent Reznor has had some choice words for Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell in the past.

While we await the official word on the tour, here is a full video set of Soundgarden playing Montreal (well, Verdun) on the Superunknown tour in 1994.
