Show picks of the week (May 8 – 14)

Waxahatchee performs at Bar le Ritz PDB on May 11th.

There are an usually high number of shows for you to get your public cry-on this week, including tonight’s sold-out Death Cab for Cutie gig at Metropolis, Monday’s Waxahatchee show at Bar le Ritz PDB, and Pianos Become the Teeth at La Vitrola the same night. Check out all of our show recommendations for the coming week below.

Friday, May 8

Death Cab for Cutie at Metropolis
Beloved emo vets Death Cab for Cutie released their solid Kintsugi album a few weeks back, and their tour in support of it brings them back to town tonight for a show at Metropolis, with Brooklyn’s The Antlers in tow. Giving their fans yet another reason to tear up, tonight’s show is sold out. Expect some cathartic sing-alongs tonight (if you managed to score a ticket). 8:00 pm, sold out, 57 Saint Catherine East.

Saturday, May 9

Evan Dando at Bar le Ritz PDB
The Lemonheads frontman may never live down his disastrous Laval show a few years back, but his set at Petit Campus last year was a blast. Dando ran through acoustic versions of Lemonheads tracks, took requests, and even pulled off an uncanny note-for-note version of Metallica’s “Fade to Black,” solo and all. Hopefully he’s in the same good spirits tonight. If you missed it, Dando was one of the first guests on our podcast – check it out here. US Northeast singer-songwriter Willy Mason opens. 9:00pm, $15/$20, 179 Jean Talon West.

Monday, May 11

Waxahatchee at Bar le Ritz PDB
Waxahatchee began as a stripped-down solo endeavor for singer Katie Crutchfield, while she was still in P.S. Eliot with her twin sister Allison (who now fronts Swearin’). Ivy Tripp, her third full-length (and Merge debut), is more of a full-band affair, with Crutchfield’s evocative voice buoyed by a killer fuzzy pop soundtrack. Opening the show is the minimalist duo Girl Pool, and locals The Muscadettes. 9:30pm, $11/$15, 179 Jean Talon West.

Pianos Become the Teeth at La Vitrola
Baltimore moody post-rock outfit Pianos Become the Teeth headline this stacked bill at La Vitrola tonight, which also includes the chaotic screamo of San Francisco’s Loma Prieta, New Jersey emo revivalists Gates, and locals Watch for Wolves. Don’t expect your bike courier to be available tonight. 7:30, $16.50 /$18, 4602 Saint Laurent.

Thursday, May 14

Pre Pouzza Fest party with Single Mothers, Dig It Up and more at Katacombes
Pouzza Fest is just around the corner, and this free pre-show at Katacombes should get your liver in order for the next three days of abuse. Ontario’s Single Mothers headline a stacked bill including Dig it Up, Austrian pop-punks Dee Cracks, Audio Visceral, Lost Love and more. Outdoor terrace acoustic sets by Revisionist and Ariane Zita will serenade while will you wait in line for the promised BBQ. 4:00pm, free, 1635 Saint Laurent.
