Show picks of the week (July 3 – 9, 2015)

The Montreal Jazz Fest continues on this week, offering up a couple of great indoor shows, including country-folk legend Lucinda Williams, and a collaboration between Toronto’s jazzy trio Badbadnotgood with Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah.

On the heavier spectrum, Cleveland hardcore vets Ringworm return for their first Montreal show in nearly a decade, and California genre-hoppers Ceremony return in support of their post-punk leaning album The L-Shaped Man, with the great Pity Sex in tow. Friday, July 3

Lucinda Williams with The Mavericks and Justin Townes Earle at Salle-Wilfrid-Pelletier
Country-folk hero Lucinda Williams headlines this solid bill of Americana rock, including long-running Florida genre-benders The Mavericks, and Justin Townes Earle, following in the folk footsteps of his father, the legendary Steve Earle.  7:30 pm, $62 – $83.50, 186 Boul. De Maisonneuve West.

Goatwhore with Ringworm and Black Breath at Foufounes Electriques
This triple-bill at Foufs features some of the current heaviest hitters in metal and hardcore, including Louisiana’s Goatwhore, Cleveland hardcore vets Ringworm, playing their first Montreal show in nearly a decade, and New York’s black metal disciples Black Breath. Theories, Canceric, and The Wild Hunt open up. Don’t forget your mouth guard for this one. 7:00 pm, $18/$20, 87 Ste-Catherine East.

Ceremony at La Sala Rossa
California’s Ceremony started out as a straight-ahead hardcore band, but have evolved their sound considerably over the years, with their recent LP for Matador, The L-Shaped Man, finding the band in definite Joy Division-esque post-punk territory. Be sure to get there early to catch the fuzzy indie-pop of Michigan’s great Pity Sex, along with locals Perverted Justice, and Nightmare Collective. 8:00 pm, $12/$14, 4848 St. Laurent. 

Saturday, July 4

Death Grips at Theatre Corona
California’s hip-hop/industrial/noise outfit Death Grips were notorious for cancelling shows during their original run, but after a quick hiatus, the group are back, and are in fact actually showing up to their scheduled gigs. They return to Montreal tonight for a long-sold out show at Theatre Corona, which has all the makings of a total rager. No opening act on this one, so get there on time. 8:00 pm, sold out, 2490 Notre Dame West.

Badbadnotgood Feat. Ghostface Killah at Metropolis
Death Grips isn’t the only hip-hop gig in town tonight; over at Metropolis, the almighty Ghostface Killah teams up with Toronto’s jazzy trio BadBadnotgood to perform tracks from their excellent collaborative album, Sour Soul. Chicago MC Mick Jenkins opens. We spoke with Ghostface a few months back about working with Badbadnotgood – check out that interview here. 8:30 pm, $33/$38.50, 57 St. Catherine St East.

Wednesday, July 8

Fantasia program launch at S.A.T.
The Fantasia film festival is fast approaching, and there’s no better way to get an overview of this year’s offerings then to check out over 100 trailers for this year’s films, screening for free tonight at the official program launch at S.A.T. You’ll also have a chance to chance to pick up a physical copy of the schedule and the phonebook-sized program before anyone else. 7:00 pm, free, 1201 Boul. St. Laurent.

Thursday, July 9

Bonvivant and Prevenge at L’Esco
Three of Quebec’s best current melodic punk bands, Bonvivant, Prevenge, and Jeffrey Lost Control, team up with Texas pop-punkers Dead Words for this stacked bill in the welcomingly sweaty confines of L’Esco. 8:30 pm, $5, 4467 St. Denis.
