Preview: Mark Sultan (BBQ), The GTs and Tang Soleil offer up a triple-bill of RN’R at Divan Orange

If the country-wide salute to The Tragically Hip isn’t your thing, head to Divan Orange tonight for a triple bill of stellar local RN’R, featuring Mark Sultan (aka BBQ), The GTs and Tang Soleil.

The insanely prolific Mark Sultan (aka the BBQ component of King Khan & BBQ Show, member / ex-member of Les Sexareenos, The Spaceshits and countless more) wears many hats, but his solo work hits that sweet spot between early 50’s rock n’ roll & doo-wop and 60’s garage & soul, without ever sounding like a retread. A Sultan gig is essentially a crash-course in rock history, delivered by the best one-man band you’re ever likely to see. Take the deep dive into his solo work here.

The GTs have been steadily building their own scene based out of their shows / parties at drummer Sam’s mile-end salon. Like Sultan, the guitar and drums duo channel early rock n’ roll, with punchy, anthemic choruses that stick in your head for days. This is a band you’ll be hearing a lot more about when their debut album hits in the coming weeks. In the meantime, stream their debut EP here.

Rounding out the gig is the mysterious Tang Soleil, Montreal’s cracked bilingual garage / noise freakout pranksters, who have the distinction of keeping up both an Angelfire AND a Geocities site, which is some truly next-level trolling in 2016. Respect.

Mark Sultan, The GTs and Tang Soleil play Divan Orange (4234 Boul St-Laurent), Saturday, August 20. 9:30 pm, $12.
