Minions: The Rise of Gru 4K review: a goofy and entertaining ’70s-set family romp.

Minions: The Rise of Gru 4K UHD Blu-ray Review

While Top Gun: Maverick soared to the top of the summer box office, the huge success of Minions: The Rise of Gru proved that this franchise may endure as long as Tom Cruise’s iconic character. The whole Gentle Minions madness aside, The Rise of Gru is a silly yet remarkably watchable origin story of Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), the goofy villain at the heart of the Despicable Me/Minions universe.

Set in 1976, the wildly colorful animated film follows an awkward 11-year-old Gru as he attempts to join Vicious 6, a supervillain team featuring the likes of Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson) and Jean-Clawed (Jean-Claude Van Damme). When his tryout fizzles out, Gru decides to steal the priceless Zodiac Stone from the team in order to impress them. The theft leads to a wild chase as the Vicious members try to track Gru down while facing off the inept minions, Gru’s haplessly cute yellow guardians.

Minions: The Rise of Gru may be the origin story no one asked for, but it’s really just an excuse for the minions to engage in all sorts of hijinx, including learning kung fu from Master Chow (Michelle Yeoh), flying a plane, and destroying half off San Francisco in an attempt to help Gru out of his predicament.

With an incredible 4K UHD presentation, an enveloping Dolby Atmos track that brings the film’s updated ’70s pop hits to life, and a stack of extras, Minions: The Rise of Gru is a must-have for fans of the franchise, regardless of age.
