Kristian North by Georgia Graham
Montreal’s Kristian North has shared the video for “Shadow of the Pyramids,” the third single off his upcoming album Passion Play, out on April 30 via Mothland.
The track is filled with North’s evocative falsetto vocals, set against pulsing synths and finger-snaps while North envisions the inevitable comedown following stratospheric highs (“Will I still be the same / After the orgy?”). It’s a playful track that merges lounge lizard showmanship with cosmic bravado for a unique mix of slinky Rn’B-tinged psychedelia that bodes well for the rest of North’s new album later this month.
The video was helmed by Beatrice Scharf-Pierzchala (No Joy, Patrick Watson) and features North as a magician who quickly loses control of his act, and includes appearances by Montreal queen The Olympia, and dancer/choreographer Laura Jeffery. The director had the following to say about the inspirations behind the clip:
“I wanted to paint Kristian as this torn-up magic man who loses control of his show. Usually the magician’s assistant is the one getting cut in half- I thought it would be fun to bring in my favourite Montreal queen, The Olympia, to turn the tables around. It’s about the ride of getting lost in something that you maybe won’t win.”
