Ivan Reitman, director of Ghostbusters, Meatballs, and Twins, has died at 75

Legendary comedy director Ivan Reitman has died at 75-years-old. His family told The Associated Press that Reitman died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Montecito, California.

“Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life,” Reitman’s children Jason Reitman, Catherine Reitman, and Caroline Reitman said in a statement. “We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always.”

Reitman is best known for producing and directing 1984’s Ghostbusters, a massive success that has spawned three sequels, including last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by his son Jason Reitman.

In addition to Ghostbusters (Reitman also directed the 1989 sequel), Reitman helmed a number of beloved ’80s comedy classics including 1979’s Meatballs (also starring Bill Murray), and a series of films that unexpectedly cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as a comedic lead (1988’s Twins, 1989’s Kindergarten Cop, and 1994’s Junior). More recently, Reitman directed 2014’s Draft Day, a drama set in the world of the NFL starring Kevin Costner.

In addition to his directing work, Reitman served as a producer and executive producer on dozens of films and TV shows over the course of his long career including producing 1978’s comedy classic National Lampoon’s Animal House, 1996’s smash Space Jam, and executive producing 1975’s Shivers, directed by fellow Canadian David Cronenberg.

Watch Ivan Reitman discuss the legacy of Ghostbusters in the interview below. RIP.
