Free Hong Kong film festival Making Waves hits Montreal this October

Over My Dead Body screens Friday, October 20th as part of the Making Waves Hong Kong film festival.

Hong Kong film fans will get to see six new features for free this month as part of the inaugural Making Waves film festival in Montreal.

Running from October 20-22 at the Cineplex Forum Theatre, the festival will screen the Montreal debuts of Over My Dead Body, In Broad Daylight, Lonely 18, Lost Love, The Narrow Road, and Deliverance.

The screening of the black comedy film Over My Dead Body on October 20 at 7:00 pm will be hosted by the film’s co-stars Jennifer Yu and Wong You-Nam, the screening of the film industry drama Lonely 18 will be hosted by star Lam Chin-Ting, and the screening of Deliverance on October 21st at 9:30 pm will be hosted by director/co-writer Kelvin Shum.

The Making Waves film festival runs from October 20-22, 2023 at Montreal’s Cineplex Forum Theatre. 

Making Waves will open on Friday, October 20th, 7:00 PM with a screening of OVER MY DEAD BODY from director Ho Cheuk-Tin. This dark humor tale of a group of irresponsible neighbors who discover a dead body and mayhem is unleashed when they cannot make up their minds what to do with it. Hosted by co-stars Jennifer Yu and Wong You-Nam.

On Saturday October 21st, 4:00 PM the Showcase’s lead film is LONELY 18, directed by Tracy Choi, a story of two best friends who enter the entertainment industry during the golden age of 1980s Hong Kong. Fate propels them to different levels of success over the next decades. Featuring new and veteran actors from different eras of Hong Kong cinema including legendary kung fu star Ti Lung and Loletta Lee. Hosted* by lead actress Lam Chin-Ting.

At 7:00 PM, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT follows an investigative report into abuse at a care home for the disabled. After the film, actress Jennifer Yu, playing the protagonist, will be on hand for a Q&A session with the audience.

At 9:30 PM, a screening of DELIVERANCE, about four siblings who reunite 15 years after their mother’s death and use unorthodox methods to recall some haunting memories from that time. Starring award-winning Simon Yam (ELECTION) and one of the final performances of veteran actor Kenneth Tsang (John Woo’s THE KILLER). Hosted by director/co-writer Kelvin Shum.

On Sunday October 22nd at 1:00 PM, Director Ka Sing Fung’s LOST LOVE is about a couple who rediscovers the good, bad and beauty of parenting new foster kids after losing their beloved young son. Starring famous singer/actress Sammi Cheng (INFERNAL AFFAIRS) who won the Hong Kong Film Critics Society’s Best Actress Award.

To close the festival at 3:30 PM, THE NARROW ROAD by director Lam Sum tells the story of Chak, who barely makes ends meet at his cleaning company until he takes former thief Candy and her adorable daughter under his wing. But things take unexpected turns despite their best intentions and as they struggle through the pandemic with careful optimism. THE NARROW ROAD was the opening film of the Hong Kong International Film Festival before doing its world tour.
