Dave Hause releases Paddy/Patty EPs, covering Dillinger Four and Patty Griffin

Americana rocker Dave Hause has unveiled his Paddy / Patty EPs, featuring drastically reworked cover versions of Dillinger Four and Patty Griffin songs, respectively.

Recorded at home in the midst of the pandemic, the EPs showcase Hause’s wide range of influences and feature a stellar lineup of guests, including Laura Stevenson, Brian Fallon, Will Hoge, Lilly Hiatt, Jake Blount, and Bartees Strange.

The Dillinger Four covers are a particular revelation, emphasizing the band’s potent and biting lyrics about the American struggle, and reimagining them as plaintive folk/protest songs.

“[Dillinger Four’s] Paddy Costello is one of my favorite lyricists, especially when he writes about the distance between the promise of the American dream and the reality of working in modern America,” Hause says. “I wanted to reimagine Paddy’s songs as folk ballads, and hopefully bring a new focus to these amazing melodies and lyrics that he and the band play at breakneck speeds through loud Marshall amps. My brother Tim’s fingerpicked guitar and vocal harmonies, along with the incredible Jake Blount’s haunting vocal gave this song a different space to live in, stripping it down to its barest form. God bless Patrick Costello, Dillinger Four, and this crooked American nightmare that we can hopefully claw our way out of.”

For the Patty Griffin covers, Hause took a stripped-down approach, reflecting the minimalist approach he employed when he first started playing out on his own. “I’ve loved her songs for so long, and have covered a few of them over the years and turned people on to her work, so I’ve had it in the back of my head for years that I would eventually see this project through,” Hause says.
