Bad Feeling Magazine Podcast # 17 with Aaron Bedard (Bane)

Bane has been such a constant presence in the hardcore scene for so many years that when the band announced their impending breakup last year, it was difficult to fathom that they were really ready to call it quits. The band celebrates their 20th anniversary this year, which in a scene focused on youthful energy and notorious for its short-attention span, is a nearly unrivalled accomplishment.

Like superheroes, hardcore bands never really die, but often return from the ashes sporadically to headline festival stages worldwide and command larger-than-ever guarantees. However, if anything, Bane was always a band that spoke from the heart, from vocalist Aaron Bedard’s impassioned stage banter, to the band’s lyrics, which often focused on the positive impact hardcore has had on their lives. So if Bane say they are calling it a day, don’t expect a reunion announcement 6 months down the road.

All of this breakup talk raises the question of why the band would call it quits after releasing their best album in years? As strange as it seems, 2014’s Don’t Wait Up is set to be the band’s final release, and if anything, the album captures the sound of a re-invigorated band, not one heading out to pasture. Still, the band promises that 2015 will be their last full active year as a band before calling it quits sometime next year.

We caught up with the band’s vocalist Aaron Bedard in Montreal recently to discuss the reasons behind the break-up, his hopes for the final year of the band, and his ideas for the band’s final show sometime next year.
