CLERK: The first trailer for the Kevin Smith documentary is here ahead of SXSW Online 2021

Filmmaker, podcaster, and all-around great storyteller Kevin Smith finally gets the documentary treatment with CLERK, from director Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar).

Initially set to premiere at SXSW 2020 (before the festival was cancelled due to the spread of coronavirus), CLERK is now set to debut at SXSW Online 2021. The virtual screening takes place on Wednesday, March 17 at 1:00 PM. More info on the screening can be found here.

Ahead of the screening, the first trailer for CLERK has dropped, showing Ingram’s intimate access to Smith and long-time collaborators like Jason Mewes, along with friends like Penn Teller, and a number of diehard fans.
Here is the official synopsis:

‘Clerk’ is an examination and celebration of the life of Kevin Smith – and an exploration on how one kid from Jersey completely transformed the cultural landscape. A journey which began 25 years ago at the Sundance Film festival where his DIY film ‘Clerks’, financed on credit cards took the film world by storm. Leading to a career as a filmmaker, podcaster, stand-up comedian, author, comic book writer, television producer – a veritable pop culture icon with a very large and loyal fanbase.

Director Malcolm Ingram has the following to say about the film:

I’ve known Kevin Smith for over 25 years. We met when we were both at the start of our careers, mine as a journalist and his as a filmmaker…

… while I slowly transitioned into making documentaries, I watched Kevin become a defining voice of a generation. He has a career that influenced many, he built an enviable loyal fan base through his early use of the internet as a megaphone, he flexed his mercantile instincts by opening a comic book store and became a raconteur of the first order by mastering live gigs and podcasting. Taking on such complex topics as sex, sexuality and religion, Kevin has never been one to walk away from controversy and I dig that.

Watching the incredible world that Kevin created from the ground up was my inspiration for making this documentary. While it was an incredibly daunting task to take on initially….

I understood that trying to maintain my creative perspective while sharing with the world what I saw from the inside was going to be a tight rope walk. It’s been a hell of a journey! Welcome to the world of Kevin Smith. Snoogans.
