The stage-shot Hamilton film is heading to Disney+ this July (15 months early)

With theatres closed for the foreseeable future, there’s no way to see a live version of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s massively successful hip hop musical based on the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Disney recently revealed that a filmed version of the stage musical would hit theatres in October 2021, but that release date has been bumped up 15 months with today’s announcement that Hamilton will head to the Disney+ streaming service on July 3 (just in time for Independence Day in the States).

“In this very difficult time, this story of leadership, tenacity, hope, love & the power of people to unite against adversity is both relevant and inspiring,” Disney executive chairman Robert Iger said on Twitter this morning.

The film features the original Hamilton Broadway cast and was shot at the Richard Rodgers Theater in June 2016.

Lin-Manuel Miranda also stars in the upcoming film musical In The Heights; the film was initially slated t open in theatres next month but is now scheduled for June 18, 2021.
