After a cancelled world premiere at this year’s SXSW (along with a scrapped IMAX run) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story is finally out today via the Apple TV+ streaming service.
The doc tells the story of the Beasties through their multi-media stage show they put on at King’s Theatre in Brooklyn last year (also directed by Jonze), based on the massive retrospective “Beastie Boys Book” from 2018.
The film features Michael Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) recounting stories from throughout the band’s career with the sort of unbridled charisma and fun that made the Beastie Boys one of the most entertaining and inventive acts in any genre through their heyday in the ’80s and ’90s. The film also serves as a moving tribute to the legacy and influence of bandmate Adam Yauch (MCA) who died from cancer in 2012.
