Heilung put on a jaw-dropping show at L’Olympia (photos)

Heilung
Olympia
January 26, 2020

Seeing Heilung live is an enveloping appearance. Self-described as “amplified history from early medieval northern Europe,” the Denmark band creates primal, rhythmic music based on ancient texts and runes. That may sound like an extremely niche genre, but the band’s entire recent North American run was sold-out, including their stop at the cavernous L’Olympia on January 26th.

Adorned with horns and spears and using human bones as drumsticks, Heilung’s stage show is remarkable; at times the members swelled to include a pantheon of warriors, lending a spear-stomping accompaniment to the band’s mystical chants. The entire performance truly felt like being transported to a different time; the incredible production design, choreography, propulsive beats and chanting all combined to create a uniquely visceral experience unlike anything else out there.

Below you can view photos from the night via Eric Brisson. Be sure to check the Heilung Facebook page to see if they’re landing on a shore near you soon.
