Wrapping up a massive multi-season show is no easy feat (see: Lost), and the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones proved to be extremely contentious amongst fans of the epic fantasy show. After morphing into a mammoth success, the final season only had six episodes to tie up the series, including settling on who would wind up assuming the mantle of the Iron Throne, and showing the long-simmering battle for Winterfell between the armies of the living and the undead.
With some dramatic character shifts and an added dose of comedy, Executive Producers / Writers / Directors David Benioff & D.B. Weiss took Game of Thrones in a number of new directions during the final season; it may not have resonated with the series’ massive fanbase, but at least the showrunners took chances, making for a fittingly unpredictable end to one of the most beloved franchises of all time.
Winter may have been coming for several years, but it has now decidedly arrived with The Complete Eighth Season of Game of Thrones on 4K Blu-ray (alongside standard Blu-ray, DVD and VOD options). The 4K Blu-ray set comes housed in a sleek steelbook, complete with a collectible sigil magnet, making for a truly striking overall package. Alongside the final six episodes of the show, extras here include a handful of full episode commentary tracks, just over eight minutes of deleted scenes, When Winter Falls, a 30-minute look at the final battle for Winterfell, Duty is the Death of Love, an extensive look at the final episode of the series running over 30 minutes, and more.
The real substantial extra here is Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, a feature-length documentary about the final season featuring tearful interviews with the principal cast and filmmakers as they look back on their time with the series and its emotional ending.
With some worthwhile extras and a stronger video presentation than many initially saw via home streaming, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season on 4K Blu-ray is a must-have for fans of the series, and a fitting look back at one of the most influential shows of the era. If you’re ready to spend your entire winter back in Westeros, the complete series is also now available in a massive collector’s box set, which should keep you busy until long after the final snow melts away next year.
Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season is available now.
