Meshuggah and High on Fire
Metropolis
October 31, 2016
Swedish metal vets Meshuggah just released their long-awaited new LP, the brutal The Violent Sleep of Reason, and are touring behind it with the incredible stoner heroes High on Fire as support. That massive double-header rolled into Metropolis on Halloween night, and as usual, Meshuggah brought along a mesmerizing light show that still may be burned into the retinas of everyone present that night.
Meshuggah evenly split their setlist between the new LP and prior releases, including 2008’s obZen and 2012’s Koloss, but had to skip out on their encore entirely as frontman Jens Kidman had almost completely lost his voice by that point. Metalheads are a forgiving bunch though, and given the band’s powerhouse main set (and a full hour of the shirtless Matt Pike shredding with High on Fire to kick off the show), the crowd definitely had a sufficient does of cranium-bursting metal for the night.
