Show picks of the week (April 7 – April 13, 2016)
This week’s top show picks include a hometown gig for local indie favourites Ought, resurrected 90’s shoegaze band The Veldt at Barfly (!) and NYC rappers Le1f and Jungelpussy at Belmont. More info on all these, along with our full list of this week’s recommended shows are below.
Thursday, April 7
The Veldt at Barfly
The Veldt were riding high on a wave of acclaim in the 90’s for their soul meets shoegaze sound, before label issues and race-based band misconceptions eventually derailed them. The band have now returned to a musical landscape that has finally caught up with them, releasing their first new music in years, and embarking on a US tour with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The band is one music doc away from being the next Death or Rodriguez, so their headlining show at Barfly tonight is an absolute must-see. $8, 8:00pm, 4062A St-Laurent.
Souper Spaghetti Punk Vol.1 at Vitrola
Pack on those carbs before getting in the pit with this stacked night of up and coming local punk and hardcore bands, featuring Facade, F.I.T.S., Gazm, Ultrarat, Banal, Faze, and free spaghetti (?!) courtesy of ‘Chef JTA.” Alongside the bands and eats, the night also features a screening of the “Louder House” documentary. $5 (or pay what you can), 8:00pm, 4602 St-Laurent.
Scott Thompson at Comedy Nest
Comic great Scott Thompson (Kids in the Hall) settles into Comedy Nest for 4 shows tonight through Saturday. This at least partially makes up for the cancelled Kids in the Hall reunion show here last year, and the cozy confines of the Comedy Nest should make for a stellar show. $12-$15 (cheaper for students), 2313 Ste. Catherine West. Visit comedynest.com for more info.
Friday, April 8
Ought at Sala Rossa
Following their incredibly in-demand sold-out show at Casa del Popolo a few months back, local angular rock heroes Ought hit Sala Rossa in support of last fall’s excellent Sun Coming Down LP. Caro Diaro and Wreckage with Stick open. You probably want to grab advance tickets for this one. $10/$12, 9:30pm, 4848 St-Laurent.
Indian Handcrafts at Turbo Haus
Indian Handcrafts, stoner rock’s heaviest duo, will lay the riffs down thick at Turbo Haus this week, with support from Dig it Up / Flatliners hybrid-band Hounds, and locals Fashion Police. $9/$13, 10:00pm, 5011 Notre-Dame West.
Saturday, April 9
Le1f with Junglepussy at Le Belmont
New York rapper Le1f combines his rapid-fire politically-laced tracks with ear-candy pop hooks, making some of the most incisive (and danceable) hip hop out there right now. His debut LP, Riot Boi, takes its cues from the Riot grrrl movement, and will hopefully spark the same sort of upheaval in the hip hop world. Soulful New York MC Junglepussy opens, making this an unmissable night of boundary-pushing hip hop. $20/$22, 10:00pm, 4483 St-Laurent.
Quilt at Divan Orange
Boston indie psych-pop band Quilt return to Montreal in support of their catchy new LP, Plaza, out now on Mexican Summer Records. Locals Ego Death open. $12, 9:30pm, 4234 St-Laurent.
The Story So Far with Comeback Kid at Club Soda
If you like your moshcore with a heavy dose of melody, don’t miss California’s The Story so Far when they hit Club Soda this week, alongside Winnipeg’s Comeback Kid and Culture Abuse. $26/$30, 7:30pm, 1225 St-Laurent.
Sunday April 10
The Dandy Warhols at L’Astral
Portland mainstays The Dandy Warhols return to Montreal for the first time in years, in support of their excellent new LP, Distortland. One of the most consistent bands in rock, the Warhols always deliver on the live front. Be sure to get there on time to catch the great soul-rock of Louisiana’s Seratones. $28/$32, 7:30pm, 305 Sainte-Catherine West.
Sarah Neufeld at Sala Rossa
Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld plays this intimate show at Sala Rossa in support of her epic sophomore LP, The Ridge. She’ll be joined by saxophonist Colin Stetson for this performance, with support coming from New York’s Eartheater. $15/$17, 8:00pm, 4848 St-Laurent.
Monday April 11
Andrew Bird at Théâtre Corona
Classically-trained violinist Andrew Bird brings his intricate indie-pop to Corona this week in support of his 11th (!) studio LP, the recently-released Are You Serious. In a very unexpected pairing, Brazilian psych-rock band Boogarins open, which makes for a pretty unique bill. $35/$40, 8:00pm, 2490 Notre-Dame West.
