Sleep
Théâtre Berri
January 24, 2016
Seven years after re-uniting, stoner rock icons Sleep finally made their way up to Montreal on Sunday for a sold-out show at Théâtre Berri. If anything, their time away has only increased their status as one of the greatest stoner rock bands ever, making this one of the most highly-anticipated shows in quite some time.
With frontman Matt Pike concentrating most of his time with his primary group High on Fire, Sleep shows are generally reserved for festival slots, which made the proposition of this rare headlining show all the more exciting.
Opening up the night were Montreal’s own Big|Brave, fresh off the release of their Southern Lord debut, Au De La. In contrast to the bludgeoning force of Sleep, Big|Brave occupy a more atmospheric space, drawing out their quieter moments before erupting into equally rib-shaking cacophony.
