Heavy Montreal
Parc Jean-Drapeau
August 9, 2015
The 7th edition of Heavy Montreal wrapped up this past weekend, with headliners Korn, Faith No More and Slipknot attracting 40,000 metal and punk fans to Parc Jean-Drapeau for three days of music and mayhem.
While the elaborate circus-themed Slipknot set was obviously the main draw for the third and final day, the real highlight occurred much earlier on, with former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone teaming up with human bundle of energy Andrew WK to run through a set of classic Ramones tunes.
Andrew WK is a consummate showman, but kept his patented high-kicks at bay for the set, honouring the no-frills approach of the Ramones as he faithfully belted out timeless tracks like “Beat on the Brat,” and “Psycho Therapy.” For a generation of fans who never got to see the Ramones, this was as close as it was going to get, and the mid-afternoon crowd seemed to relish every song’s inevitable “1-2-3-4” kickoff.
