Show picks of the week (April 10 – April 16)

While every other band is off at Coachella, there is still a solid and diverse set of shows to look forward to this week. Check out our recommendations below.

Friday, April 10

The Fleshtones at Bar le Ritz PDB
Long-standing NYC garage fiends The Fleshtones have been pumping out their brand of party rock for nearly 40 years now, with no signs of slowing down. Don’t miss this rare chance to catch these pre-punk garage originators in the cozy confines of Bar le Ritz. Dancing shoes are mandatory. Opening up are Les Deuxluxes and Pow Wows, along with DJ’s Ben Shulman & Parka Pat from Mod Club Montreal. 9:30pm, $15/$20, 179 Jean Talon West. 

Saturday, April 11 

Dopethrone at Katacombes
Montreal’s Dopethrone take their name from the classic album by the UK doom legends Electric Wizard (who we just interviewed), and their sound is similarly steeped in that band’s classic riff-heavy output. This is the record launch for their Hochelaga LP, and judging by the tracks they’ve released so far, this should be their heaviest record yet. Also on the bill are locals Tumbleweed Dealer and Squalor, which makes for an overall crushing lineup. 8:30pm, $8/$10, 1635 Saint Laurent. 

Sunday, April 12

The Soft Moon at Bar le Ritz PDB
As The Soft Moon, producer and multi-instrumentalist Luis Vasquez creates an abrasive mix of minimalist post-punk, filtered through a lens of Krautrock and synth-punk. This is dark, ominous electronica, though Vasquez’s pop hooks are constantly bubbling beneath the icy surface. Opening up are New York’s prolific Noveller, and Montreal’s Xarah Dion. 9:30, $11/$13, 179 Jean Talon West. 

Tuesday, April 14

Disgrace and God’s Hate at Katacombes
California’s Disgrace have that 90’s East Coast metallic hardcore sound down pat, channeling the best bands from that era like All Out War and Merauder. This tour has them teamed up with fellow Californian’s God’s Hate, who also sound like they came straight out of an old upstate New York hardcore compilation. Openers include Nuke, Iron Golem, Ordeal, and True North Strong. 7:00pm, $13/$15, 1635 Saint Laurent.

Thursday, April 15

Earl Sweatshirt at the Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre
Fresh off the surprise online release of his I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside LP last month, the Odd Future collective’s most reclusive rapper will make his highly-anticipated Montreal debut this week. It will definitely be interesting to see how his intricate, claustrophobic sound translates into a live setting. Tickets for this one are moving fast, so consider this a warning if you haven’t grabbed your’s yet. Opening up the night are California’s Vince Staples and New York’s Remy Banks. 8:00pm, $32, 2490 Notre Dame West.
