Show Picks of the week (April 3 – April 9)

New Jersey’s Screaming Females play Bar le Ritz PDB on April 8th.

Plenty going on during this long Easter weekend, including rare appearances by a pair of legendary UK bands on Saturday night. Check out our full list of this week’s recommended shows below.

Friday, April 3

Ghostface Killah with GZA and Cappadonna at Theatre Telus
Three of Wu-Tang Clan’s heaviest wordsmiths team up for a show at Theatre Telus tonight, for a night that should re-ignite memories of when the Wu ruled the hip hop landscape. We spoke to Ghostface about the upcoming Wu-Tang album that we’ll only get to hear in 88 years, and his thoughts on Canadian hip hop – check it out here. 10:00pm, 1280 St-Denis, $46/$57.

Saturday, April 4

Electric Wizard at Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre
UK doom legends Electric Wizard are touring North America for the first time in over a decade, including this long sold-out gig at Theatre Corona. If you missed it, catch up on our interview with the band’s mastermind Jus Oboron here. Opening up are Blood Ceremony and Satan’s Satyrs8:00pm, sold out, 2490 Rue Notre-Dame West.

The Mob at Katacombes
Original UK anarcho-punks The Mob regrouped a couple of years back, and by all accounts the band are still a powerhouse live. Their sole studio album, 1983’s Let the Tribe Increase, is a classic slab of moody post-punk that still holds up remarkably well today. They headline a stacked bill including Deathfox, Johnny Couteau, and Perverted Justice. This is a late show, so if you managed to score a ticket to Electric Wizard you’ll be able to catch both shows if you’re willing to put in the leg work. 10:00pm, $12/$15, 1635 Boul. Saint Laurent.

Tuesday, April 7

Public Service Broadcasting at Bar le Ritz PDB
And now for something completely different – London duo Public Service Broadcasting are an instrumental group that utilize vintage British public service videos to create a unique and immersive live experience. The band mix live instrumentation with electronics and black and white newsreels in a hypnotic, sensory-overload fashion – this is undoubtedly the most high-brow dance party you can catch this week. LA’s Kauf opens. 8:00pm, $15/$17, 179 Jean Talon West.

Wednesday, April 8

Screaming Females at Bar le Ritz PDB
New Jersey’s Screaming Females are a tough band to categorize, but an absolute must-see live. Singer / guitarist Marissa Paternoster snarls and growls her way through the band’s blistering songs, while laying down some of the most ridiculous guitar shredding this side of Hendrix. A potent indie/punk rock band with an emphasis on the r-o-c-k, Screaming Females are one of the best live bands on the road right now. We caught them back at the same venue last year, opening for The Julie Ruin – you can check out photos and a review of the show here. Opening are fellow Don Giovanni Records labelmates Mitski9:00pm, $10/$13, 179 Jean Talon West.

Thursday, April 9

The Decibel Magazine Tour at Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre
Decibel Magazine’s annual tour features a killer lineup this year, with Swedish death metal greats At the Gates, the boundary-pushing Converge, the proggy doom of Pallbearer, and the intense death metal of Vallenfyre. The show was recently moved from the cavernous Metropolis to the slightly-less imense Theatre Corona, so don’t expect tickets to last too long for this one. We also have a contest for a free pair of tickets to the show – enter here! 6:30, $35 / $40, 2490 Rue Notre-Dame West.
