Electro-pop wizard Ryan Hemsworth brings his Sucker for Punishment tour to Le Belmont Friday

Ryan Hemsworth’s new LP, Alone for the First Time, echoes crisp winter nights. His compositions are like snow softly descending – nostalgic, cold, and comfortable.

As a self-proclaimed Canadian Prince from Halifax, Hemsworth should know a thing or two about the solitude that accompanies a winter in Canada. His bedroom pop has a distinct melancholic undertone. He mimics the melodies performed by analogue music boxes, mixing in 8-bit video game samples, trap rap polyrhythms, and hip-hop vocals. What Hemsworth ends up with is an eclectic, spaced-out, bubblegum sound with an awkward adolescent charm. He doesn’t commit to a particular genre, but instead produces a wide array of lush, full-bodied instrumental textures that envelop the listener in a blanket of tender, silky sounds, well suited for a glacial November evening.

Ryan Hemsworth plays Le Belmont (4483 Boulevard Saint-Laurent) this Friday, November 14th with Tennyson & Munno. Tickets are $20, available here
