Bad Feeling Magazine Podcast # 14 with John Tardy (Obituary)

Listen to our interview with John via the embedded media player above, or right-click and “save as” here.

Obituary vocalist John Tardy is a pretty affable guy. That the highly-influential death metal singer, renowned for his guttural vocals and brutal lyrics on tracks like “Internal Bleeding” and “Chopped In Half” is so laid back, and even cheery, speaks to the bullshit-free nature of the band itself.

Obituary are one of the pioneers of death metal, dating back to their roots in Tampa, Florida in the early 80’s, alongside locals like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide. Their run of early records, including Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death, set the template for countless death metal bands to follow, with Tardy’s inhuman-sounding vocals overlaid on the band’s punishing, groove-laden sound.

The just-released Inked In Blood is Obituary’s first full length in five years, following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign to raise money for its recording. We caught up with John while the band was on the road in support of the record to discuss the pros and cons of crowd-funding, the origins of the band, and the state of metal today.

Obituary are on tour with Death For All throughout November, and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away to their Montreal stop on November 28th. Get the details for that here.
