L.A. genre-benders Warpaint will make things weird tonight

The Los Angeles quartet Warpaint boasts an expansive sound. They wax and wane between gloomy guitar riffs, starry-eyed ambient melodies, and tender raw vocals. These four women bear a bold aesthetic. Both in sound and style, Warpaint stand out. They might seem an amalgamation of 1990’s goth rock harmonies and trip-hop tempos. They might seem to structure their songs like that of an experimental jam-band. Sure. But their cohesive marriage of these has-been elements creates an atmospheric, unfamiliar, sound that is wholly their own.

Their potent angelic vocals seem to expand for miles, commanding the horizons of the beyond. Warpaint’s unpredictable musical arrangements are erratic and exciting. They genre-bend, exploring and layering various textures, tints, shades, and tones to create a vast spectrum of soaring sound. Their presence is especially compelling at their live performances.

This is a show that will materialize like a daydream, both extending beyond and as an extension of reality: too good to be true.

Warpaint perform Tuesday, October 7th at Theatre Corona Virgin Mobile in Montreal. Details and tickets are available here.
