Bad Feeling Magazine Podcast # 9 with James Rolfe & Kevin Finn (Angry Video Game Nerd : The Movie)

James Rolfe in The Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie.

James Rolfe ‘s Angry Video Game Nerd persona has been around for a full decade, and is now finally making the leap from YouTube to feature film territory.

The Angry Video Game Nerd is a beer-guzzling, foul-mouthed and short-tempered video game fanatic, whose sarcastic video reviews of vintage games have been a huge hit among both gamers and non-gamers alike. Anyone who has ever thrown a Nintendo controller against the wall in frustration over an unbeatable boss, or a seemingly random mission, can relate to the Nerd’s unbridled rage.

Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie is a wacky science-fiction road trip flick, revolving around the Nerd’s attempts to thwart the urban legend surrounding the E.T. video game for Atari, a game so allegedly terrible that it nearly bankrupted Atari, forcing the producers to bury the cartridges in a massive desert landfill. He’s accompanied on his debunking quest by Nerd fanboy Cooper, (Jeremy Suarez) who hopes to convince the Nerd to acquiesce to the fans and review the E.T. game, a game so bad that it traumatized the Nerd in his youth. Along the way, the Nerd is forced to tussle with with deranged federal agents from Area 51, giant aliens, and an insidious video game corporation called “Cockburn Inc.”

The movie was entirely financed by fans, many of whom have cameos, and has a zany, off-the-wall quality, that only a truly independent feature can achieve. We spoke with the Nerd himself, James Rolfe, as well as the film’s co-writer and co-director Kevin Finn, about the origins of the Angry Video Game Nerd, the process of turning the web series into a feature film, and the concept of “so bad it’s good.”

Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie is available as of today on Video On Demand. You can listen to our interview via the embedded media player below, or right-click and “save as” here: Episode 9: James Rolfe & Kevin Finn.
