Propagandhi, RVIVR & War on Women played a sweaty show at Club Soda (Review, Photos & Setlist)

Winnipeg thrashers Propagandhi returned to Montreal last week, capping off a stacked night of political punk rock that also featured Olympia, Washington’s RVIVR, and Baltimore’s War on Women.

Propagandhi are generally not ones for looking back, and stuck mainly to their more metallic-tinged recent albums for the duration of their nearly 90-minute set. Thankfully, they did still journey “back into the time machine,” as frontman Chris Hannah joked, for a few tracks from their classic How To Clean Everything LP.

RVIVR received a great response earlier on in the night, and the band seemed genuinely excited about the show and the bill. In stark contrast to their notorious stage banter against everything from crowd surfing to tall fans crowding the front of the stage, the band seemed satisfied to let their music do the talking this time. They did, however, take a moment to touch on the pro gender-choice message behind last year’s excellent The Beauty Within album, and acknowledged / shrugged off the constant shit-talking that has dogged the band since they started.

War on Women started the night off with a tight set of abrasive punk rock that was equal parts Bikini Kill and The Jesus Lizard, a rare but potent combination. As their name suggests, the band tackle feminist issues with a totally in-our-face approach, and easily won over the early evening crowd.
