Listening to Tony Molina’s Dissed & Dismissed record can be a disorienting experience at first. The 12-song “LP” flies by in just 12-minutes, with buzzing and hooky anthems blaring by just when you expect a monstrous chorus or another verse to kick in. Yet, these are all fully-formed power-pop gems, straight out of the vintage Weezer and Teenage Fanclub mold, but simply reduced to their barest elements. Choruses? Who needs ’em!
Tony has been in a number of Bay Area bands, including straight-ahead hardcore outfits like Caged Animal, the blown-out low-fi noise punk of Violent Change, and Ovens, which stylistically paved the path for Tony’s current sound.
Dissed & Dismissed, his first solo album, was initially pressed in a limited run of 500 copies via the Melters label, and sold out as quick as one of the album’s tracks. Thankfully, and likely to the annoyance of record nerds everywhere, Slumberland has re-issued the record this week, just in time for Tony’s upcoming May tour with Against Me! and Seattle’s Big Eyes (road trip anyone?) Tony has also just added a Montreal show on May 8 with New Swears, Heat and Look Vibrant, at TRH Bar. Check out all Tony’s dates below, as well as his new video for “Don’t Come Back”, and a stream of the last Big Eyes LP.
