Despite the reprehensible characters he often portrays, Ray Wise is a true gentleman. In Montreal to attend the world premiere of his new film Suburban Gothic, which screened before a sold-out crowd at the Fantasia Film Festival, Ray took some time out of his hectic schedule to chat with us about the film, as well as his iconic role as Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks!

Suburban Gothic is one of the rare films that perfectly balances both its horror and comedic elements. Directed by Richard Bates Jr. (Excision) the film stars Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Raymond, a pseudo-hipster forced to move back home with his parents. Constantly berated by his bigoted football-coach father, (Ray Wise) Raymond’s only solace is his new goth friend Becca (Kat Dennings). Becca is also the only person who believes in Raymond’s supernatural visions that have haunted him since he was a child, which appear as a number of goofy manifestations, including an inky black menace, and via synchronized peeling toenails.

Suburban Gothic plays out like a modern Evil Dead 2, with equal dollops of scares and genuine laughs, the highlight of which is the great adversarial relationship between Raymond and his father. A perfect midnight movie, this is a film that demands to be seen with a large crowd, or at the very least, during an all-night slumber party.

In addition to the upcoming release of Suburban Gothic, Ray Wise is also celebrating the blu ray launch of Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery which finally sees the light of day on July 29. The long-awaited box set includes both the American and UK versions of the show’s pilot, both seasons of the series, as well as the Fire Walk With Me prequel, which also includes the fabled 90 minutes of unseen footage cut from the film, available now for the first time. The set also includes a new sequence filmed by David Lynch, in which Leland Palmer makes his grand return.
